The South Korean electronics group whose Samsung Electronics arm makes the Galaxy XR, the first headset built on Google's Android XR platform, launched in 2025.
About Samsung
Samsung is a South Korean business group founded in 1938. Its largest company, Samsung Electronics, is one of the world's biggest makers of smartphones, TVs, memory chips and displays. Its Galaxy brand covers phones, tablets, watches and earbuds, and Samsung's own displays and chips appear in many products across the electronics industry.
VR and XR products
Samsung has a long history in VR. It worked with Oculus on the phone-based Gear VR in the 2010s and sold Windows Mixed Reality headsets under the Odyssey name. Its current headset is the Samsung Galaxy XR, launched in October 2025 at $1,799.99. Samsung built it with Google and Qualcomm as the first device on Android XR. It has micro-OLED displays, eye and hand tracking, color passthrough and Gemini built in, and its apps come from Google Play.
Samsung's role in VR today is mainly as a hardware maker. Google owns the Android XR software platform and store, and Samsung adds its own Galaxy features and services on top.
