PatchWorld is a VR creative sandbox for Meta Quest where you wire together blocks for sound, visuals and logic to build instruments, games and whole worlds.
PatchWorld is a creativity and design app with a strong social side, made by patchXR and published by PatchXR AG. It is a live sandbox that mixes music, art, logic and physics, and you can build anything from a small toy or instrument to a game, a machine, an audiovisual show or a full world. It has been on the Meta Horizon Store since July 7, 2022.
What you can do
PatchWorld borrows ideas from modular synthesizers and visual programming. You connect blocks in 3D space, and there are over 230 of them covering sound, visuals, logic, physics, motion and interaction. Changes take effect right away while your creation keeps running, so building feels like tinkering with a physical machine.
- Browse more than 500 ready-made devices and over 3,000 worlds published by the community.
- Open other people's creations to see how they work, then remix them or start from scratch.
- Link outside music gear and software through MIDI, OSC, Ableton Link and WebBridge.
- Use PatchSound, the studio's own real-time spatial audio engine, for instruments and live shows.
- Bring in your own sounds, images, 3D assets and avatars, with optional AI tools to generate content.
Help is available through the studio's Discord, wiki and workshops.
Multiplayer
The store lists single-player, multiplayer and co-op. You can build and play with other people in the same space, which suits jam sessions and group projects.
Comfort
Meta rates PatchWorld as comfortable for most people. It supports seated, standing and room-scale play, and you can use Touch controllers or hand tracking.
