FitXR

FitXR is a subscription fitness app from London-based FitXR and one of the most downloaded titles in the fitness and health category. It grew out of the studio's earlier game BoxVR and launched on Quest under the FitXR name on July 30, 2020.

What it does

FitXR works like a virtual gym. Digital instructors lead music-driven classes in several studios, including Box, Combat, HIIT, Dance, Sculpt and Flow, and the catalog holds more than 1,000 classes. In boxing and combat you punch and block targets in time with the music, while dance and sculpt classes have you follow an instructor's moves. New classes arrive daily, and quarterly seasons add new environments, glove skins, badges and other rewards. Medals and move points track your effort from class to class.

Multiplayer

You can work out with friends in private sessions or join public multiplayer classes with other members, and the Combat studio adds head-to-head battles.

Comfort

There is no artificial movement: you stay in one spot and move your own body, which avoids the main cause of VR motion sickness. The workouts themselves can be very demanding, and you need clear space around you for punches and kicks. The PICO listing names both standing and seated play.

Platforms and what to know before buying

• It is free to download on the Meta Horizon Store, but the classes need a membership: $12.99 a month or $107.99 a year in the US, after a seven-day free trial.
• On Quest it supports headsets from the Meta Quest 2 to the Meta Quest 3S. Mixed reality is available across the app on Quest 3 and Quest 3S, and hand tracking works in all studios, so you can work out without controllers.
• It is also on the PICO Store for headsets up to the PICO 4 Ultra, with a $12.99 monthly subscription; that version was last updated in June 2024.
• The original Quest 1 only gets a limited version and no new development.
• It is rated 3+ on the Meta Horizon Store and the PICO Store.
